The Problem Audit

A diagnostic system for identifying, validating, and solving the right problems. Not symptoms—roots.

The Premise

Most people solve symptoms. They treat the cough instead of the infection, the calendar overflow instead of the prioritization failure, the low revenue instead of the wrong market fit.

The Problem Audit is a causal identification system. It moves you from "what hurts" through "why it hurts" to "what would actually fix it."

Core Principle: The right problem, poorly solved, beats the wrong problem, perfectly solved.

Phase 1: The Three Questions

These questions function as triage. They reveal where your energy is going and whether it's going to the right place.

1
Are you solving the right problem?
Surfaces whether your current focus is on a symptom or a root cause.
2
How do you know you're solving the right problem?
Forces articulation of problem definition criteria—how you'd recognize the right problem if you saw it.
3
Is the problem really worth solving?
Considers impact comparison against competing priorities.

Phase II: The Three Layers

Apply this three-layer analysis to determine if you've found a root cause or just another symptom.

🌊
Surface Problems (Symptoms)
Immediate, visible, painful—but regenerating if solved alone.
  • What specifically is not working?
  • When did it start?
  • Who is affected?
⚙️
Contributing Factors (Proximate Causes)
Explanatory, conditional, systemic—improves outcomes but underlying dynamics persist.
  • What conditions allow this symptom to exist?
  • What systems or processes are involved?
  • Is this a one-time failure or a pattern?
🎯
Root Causes (Fundamental Dynamics)
Generative, upstream, structural—solving here eliminates the problem category entirely.
  • What belief makes the contributing factors acceptable?
  • What must be true at a fundamental level for this to resolve?
  • What does this problem allow us to avoid?

The Closing Phase

None of this matters if your decision leaves you still treading water. Now is the time to choose the future you want.

4
How do you know when the problem has been solved?
Reveals whether you have clear understanding of your intended outcome.
5
What happens if you don't solve it?
Defines stakes and validates (or invalidates) urgency.
