The Premise
Most people solve symptoms. They treat the cough instead of the infection, the calendar overflow instead of the prioritization failure, the low revenue instead of the wrong market fit.
The Problem Audit is a causal identification system. It moves you from "what hurts" through "why it hurts" to "what would actually fix it."
Core Principle: The right problem, poorly solved, beats the wrong problem, perfectly solved.
Phase 1: The Three Questions
These questions function as triage. They reveal where your energy is going and whether it's going to the right place.
Phase II: The Three Layers
Apply this three-layer analysis to determine if you've found a root cause or just another symptom.
- What specifically is not working?
- When did it start?
- Who is affected?
- What conditions allow this symptom to exist?
- What systems or processes are involved?
- Is this a one-time failure or a pattern?
- What belief makes the contributing factors acceptable?
- What must be true at a fundamental level for this to resolve?
- What does this problem allow us to avoid?
